“It’s a solar roof, as opposed to modules on a roof,” says Musk, as he reveals his strategy to enhance homes around the world. “I think this is really a fundamental part of achieving differentiated product strategy, where you have a beautiful roof. It’s not a thing on the roof. It is the roof.”
The new technology gives Musk the opportunity to corner a new market of solar paneling – those houses that need new roofs.
“You don’t want to put solar panels on a roof you know you are going to replace,” Musk said. “However, if your roof is nearing end of life and you have to get a new roof anyway…; why not have a solar roof that is better in many other ways as well.”
The expected merger between Musk’s Tesla Motors and Solar City is expected some time near the end of 2016 and hooking houses up with solar roof tops is a perfect way to integrate electric charging with your Tesla car or home battery.
Not much information has been given about how the roofs will actually work, but production is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2017. Expect to hear more when the merger between Tesla and Solar City is complete.
